Our scale doesn't do lower than 1 gram increments, so it could be just over or just under 3 grams. I took a picture next to a regular penny, I hope this turns out ok.

Looks like it was used in a chemistry experiment. The aluminum cents were coined in 1974 IIRC and all were destroyed less one in the Smithsonian. Zinc plated cents were made until 1982. Occasionally a penny will turn up, post 1982, that is missing it's copper plating. Also, you can find "brass" coated zinc cents.
