The Advance-Decline Line (AD Line) is a breadth indicator based on Net Advances, which is the number of advancing stocks less the number of declining stocks. Net Advances is positive when advances exceed declines and negative when declines exceed advances. Enter the advance-decline (AD) line, a technical-analysis tool that charts the number of advancing stocks minus the number of declining stocks each trading day over time. The AD line rises when advances exceed declines, and it falls when declines exceed advances. The information is back-dated to the start of the period, so on a 5-minute chart information in the period dated 12:45 includes all trades between 12:45 and 12:49 inclusive.
