The Scottish oil industry is entering its final decade of production - Edinburgh researchers have warned. A study has revealed UK oil and gas reserves may only last another decade, with close to A report by accountancy firm Grant Thornton shows that if an Independent Scotland received only 82.5% of North Sea Oil and Gas revenues (without out the 6,000 sq miles of Scottish waters, London made English in 1999) Scotland would have a budget surplus of £4.4 billion, with 95% of revenues (with Scotland's marine boundaries restored) this would increase to £6.2 billion. Scottish waters consisting of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil resources in the European Union – Scotland is the EU's largest petroleum producer, with the discovery of North Sea oil transforming the Scottish economy. Oil was discovered in the North Sea in 1966, with the first year of full production taking place in 1976. "It's Scotland's oil" was a widely publicised political slogan used by the Scottish National Party (SNP) during the 1970s in making their economic case for Scottish independence. It was argued that the discovery of North Sea oil off the coast of Scotland , and the revenue that it created would not benefit Scotland to any significant degree while Scotland remained part of the United Kingdom .

Taxes collected from oil production fell from £1.8bn in 2015 to just £60m in 2016. The gap between tax revenues and what Scotland spends is now 9.5 per cent, or £14.8bn, compared to a 4 per

Scottish production increased by 21.4% compared to 2014-5, and accounted for 81 per cent of the UK total. For over 50 years, Scotland's oil and gas industry has worked in the harsh conditions of the North Sea. This has demanded constant development of new technologies, processes and best-in-class training. Now, as the industry matures, Scottish companies lead the way in recovery maximisation and decommissioning.

North Sea oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, comprising liquid petroleum and natural gas, produced from petroleum reservoirs beneath the North Sea.. In the petroleum industry, the term "North Sea" often includes areas such as the Norwegian Sea and the area known as "West of Shetland", "the Atlantic Frontier" or "the Atlantic Margin" that is not geographically part of the North Sea.
